Health Sciences Archives 101, Nov 12, 2020 12:00 PM Central Time
Are you a librarian transitioning into archival work? Have you recently taken on care of the archives at your library, but you’re not sure where to start? Are you interested in how archives help support medical centers? Then this webinar is for you. Lisa A. Mix will teach you about basic archives functions, including acquisition, description, reference, and preservation. We’ll also delve into privacy regulations (HIPAA, etc.), digitization, funding sources, professional associations, and outreach, as well as new considerations and practices for the COVID-19 era. Find out how you can use archives to serve your library’s patrons and support your institution’s mission.
Lisa A. Mix has worked in archives at several academic medical centers, including Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, the University of California San Francisco, and NewYork-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medicine in New York. She is a Baltimore native and holds degrees from Goucher College and The Johns Hopkins University. Her professional interests include teaching with primary sources, digital archives, and archival ethics. She has published and presented widely on archives and history of the health sciences. She is the 2020 recipient of the Lisabeth M. Holloway Award from Librarians, Archivists, and Museum Professionals in the History of the Health Sciences, and currently chairs the Society of California Archivists Advocacy & Public Policy Committee. She is a Certified Archivist and a Digital Archives Specialist.

Our members promote health literacy by providing reputable health related resources to Illinois health care providers and consumers through resource sharing of library collections through interlibrary loan, training in selection of and access to health related resources, and collaborative reference initiatives to respond to provider and consumer health questions.
HSLI encourages the continuing education of its membership by sponsoring appropriate education programs. We encourage dialogue among our members and promote cooperation among libraries in Illinois by strengthening cooperative relationships with academic, public, and special libraries, and with organizations which establish and promote multi-type library cooperation activities. HSLI provides a mechanism for interaction with, and communication to and from, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Greater Midwest Region, the Midwest Chapter/MLA, and the Illinois State Library.
