The role of medical and hospital librarians is rapidly changing and evolving. At the same time, they are experiencing a revolution in how medical information is exchanged and distributed. Changes in scholarly communication, the digital transformation of medical journals, the movement to open science, and the rapid pace of experimentation and research have made it extremely difficult for physicians and clinicians to keep current with medical literature, especially at the point of care.
At the same time, the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and inordinate stress on the healthcare community has resulted in staffing cutbacks and constrained budgets for institutions and their medical library programs.
To preserve their essential role in managing the wealth and scope of medical information for hospitals and clinicians, medical librarians need to find ways to communicate and promote the strategic role they play as sponsors of evidence-based information and the support tools needed at the point of care.
