(via ALA)
In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, ALA invites you to a virtual program to learn how libraries can support coworkers and patrons on the autism spectrum. Titled “Information Literacy: Autism Awareness for Library Workers”, the webinar will take place on Monday, April 28, at 9:00 AM CDT. The program will be a moderated conversation. More information on the moderators is below.
• Cindy Hohl (Santee Sioux Nation) is the 2024-2025 president of the American Library Association (ALA) and is director of policy analysis and operational support at Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library. Hohl is past president of the American Indian Library Association.
• Temple Grandin is an autism expert and a New York Times best-selling author (Thinking in Pictures, The Autistic Brain, Animals in Translation and Visual Thinking) and a Distinguished Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University. Temple has appeared on numerous TV shows such as 20/20 and Prime Time.
• Mychal Threets is a librarian, literary ambassador, and the library’s number one fan (according to himself, admittedly). He grew up in Fairfield, CA, right between Sacramento and San Francisco. He was raised in his local library as a home-school kid. He got his first library job as a library shelver at the library he grew up in and worked his way up to become Supervising Librarian. He talks about his mental health in hopes that it’ll help others in their journey. He is a recipient of the 2023 “I Love My Librarian” award from the American Library Association, one of School Library Journal’s 2024 Movers and Shakers, and one of TIME Magazine’s 2024 Next Generation Leaders.
• Moderator Sally Stieglitz is the Communications & Outreach Coordinator at Long Island Library Resources Council (LILRC), Editor-in-Chief at AJL News & Reviews, a contributing writer to American Libraries magazine, and a Solar System Ambassador for NASA. She presents nationally on diversity and inclusion in libraries.
