The Association of College & Research Libraries has announced its preconference sessions for this summer’s ALA Annual Conference in Orlando. The three sessions will take place on Friday, June 24. Information about each session is below.
- Building a Curriculum on the Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy (Friday, June 24, 1:00 – 4:00 PM) This workshop is intended especially for librarians who work in scholarly communications or information literacy. Using the ACRL Framework and Intersections White Paper as a guide, participants will learn how take on a leadership role in campus-wide projects and initiatives that involve such issues as open access, data literacy, and intellectual property. More information is available here. (One of the instructors is Maryam Fakouri, Intellectual Property Librarian at Columbia College Chicago.)
- Crossing the Threshold with Threshold Concepts: Redesigning a Library Instruction Lesson Plan (Friday, June 24, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM) Working with the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, participants will learn how to incorporate threshold concepts effectively into their classroom instruction and to link the concepts with existing standards. In the process, participants will determine the best methods for helping students master the more difficult threshold concepts, and for integrating the concepts into an institution-wide framework for information literacy. For more information, go here.
- Teaching Data Information Literacy: A Hands-on Introduction (Friday, June 24, 1:00 – 4:30 PM) This is an interactive presentation in which participants will listen to presenters share their advice for incorporating information literacy into instruction, and then have the opportunity to design a lesson plan appropriate for their own students. Participants will focus specifically on the differences between data information literacy and data literacy. Additional information can be found here.
