I was recently appointed to the ALA Working Committee on Eliminating Monetary Library Fines as a Form of Social Justice. This group was formed as a result of the passage of a Resolution on Monetary Library Fines as a Form of Social Inequity at ALA Midwinter 2019.
We are working to create a toolkit for libraries of all types with information resources, strategies, and tips for libraries wishing to eliminate fines. As this trend continues to build throughout the U.S., there is a growing demand from library staff and stakeholders on how to successfully transition to a fine-free library environment.
And that’s where you come in! We are seeking feedback from a broad range of ALA divisions, round tables, and committees to find out what type of information you and your membership would find helpful in this toolkit. What do you want to make sure we cover? What topics are the most relevant to your membership when it comes to fines?
Please send any feedback or questions to Sarah.Houghton@ucop.edu by Friday, April 12th (apologies in advance for the tight timeline).
