We are assessing the incidence and prevalence of sexual harassment and related misconduct in academic libraries. This survey examines three levels of sexual harassment in the workplace: gender harassment, unwanted sexual attention, and sexual coercion or assault. Because we are studying the incidence and prevalence of these behaviors, we encourage all academic librarians to complete the survey whether or not they feel they have experienced any of them.

You are invited to participate in a research survey, entitled “Sexual Harassment in Academic Libraries.” The study is being conducted by Joanna Hunter (jhunter35@radford.edu ) and Allison Wisecup (awisecup@radford.edu) in the Department of Sociology and the Center for Social and Cultural Research at Radford University and Candice Benjes-Small (cbsmall@wm.edu) in William & Mary Libraries at William & Mary.
The purpose of this study is to examine incidence and prevalence of sexual harassment and related misconduct in academic libraries. Your participation in the survey will contribute to a better understanding of sexual harassment in academic libraries. We estimate that it will take about 20 minutes of your time to complete the questionnaire. You are free to contact the primary investigator at the below address and phone number to discuss the survey.
There is some risk to participation including psychological harm from recalling potential instances of sexual harassment and/or related misconduct. In the event that completion of the survey triggers any negative effects, please consider contacting a counseling service, such as the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline, 1-800-656-4673. There will be no costs for participating, nor will you directly benefit from participating. IP addresses will be recorded but not linked with your responses. A limited number of research team members will have access to the data during data collection. Identifying information will be stripped from the final dataset.
Your participation in this survey is voluntary. You may decline to answer any question and you have the right to withdraw from participation at any time without penalty. If you wish to withdraw from the study or have any questions, contact the investigator listed above.
If you have any questions, please call Joanna Hunter at 1-540-831-5130 or send an email to jhunter35@radford.edu. You may also request a hard copy of the survey from the contact information above.
