Fellow STEM librarians:
You are being asked to participate in a research survey conducted by Alyssa Young and Kelly Giles from James Madison University.
The American Library Association interprets a diverse collection as one that “should contain content by and about a wide array of people and cultures to authentically reflect a variety of ideas, information, stories, and experiences” (American Library Association, 2006). In order to create diverse collections, library workers need to select, maintain, and review the materials in their collections to fill gaps and include works by and about diverse populations.
The purpose of this study is to survey librarians involved in their institution’s recommendation or selection of STEM books, to learn more about what actions they are taking to make their STEM collections more inclusive and incorporate more diverse perspectives, and what support is provided or needed for these efforts.
This study will contribute to the researchers’ professional development and efforts to improve STEM collection development in libraries.
This study consists of an online survey that will be administered to individual participants through QuestionPro (an online survey tool). Participation will require less than 15 minutes of your time.
