Call for Volunteers: IACRL Committees

(via Dan Matthews, IACRL Vice-President/President-Elect)

Join an IACRL committee! IACRL is seeking members for all committees. This year, we are specifically in need of members to serve on the Membership Committee and to chair various committees. Serving on a committee is a great way to meet other Illinois academic library workers and donate time to the community.

To get involved, fill out the Committee Interest Form.

Committee members are appointed for three-year terms, and the time commitment is around 1-2 hours per month, sometimes less. Chairs are appointed for one-year terms and can expect a time commitment around 2-3 hours per month.

The committee descriptions are below.

Conference and Continuing Education Committee

The committee shall provide workshops, conferences, symposium, classes and other educational experiences for members.

Membership Committee

The committee shall actively recruit and promote membership engagement and retention in IACRL. The committee shall work with the Vice President/President Elect to identify volunteers to serve on committees.

Communications Committee

The committee shall publish a newsletter at least twice a year (during the Fall and Spring). The general and managing editors shall be elected by the committee. The committee shall be responsible for the maintenance of the IACRL web site.

Awards Committee

The committee shall be responsible for the award of Illinois Academic Librarian of the Year and for any other awards the association deems appropriate. The committee shall submit award decisions to the Executive Committee.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee

The committee works to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within Illinois academic libraries.

We hope that you’ll get involved! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Dan Matthews, IACRL Vice-President/President-Elect, at matthewsd29@morainevalley.edu.

The IACRL Nominations Committee is seeking candidates for the 2022-2023 Executive Board election. In April of 2022, members will vote for the IACRL Vice-President/President-Elect and Secretary. Vice-President/President-Elect is a three-year commitment (one year as Vice-President/President-Elect, one year as President, and one year as Past President), beginning in July of 2022 and ending in June of 2025. Secretary is a one-year position, beginning in July of 2022 and ending in June of 2023.

The nomination process begins with an open call for nominations for these positions. All IACRL members are invited to nominate a colleague or self-nominate. Submission of a nominee suggestion form does not guarantee the nominee will appear on the slate. The Nominating Committee will review all nominations and may also seek additional individuals to meet identified needs, in order to develop the strongest possible slate. According to the IACRL Bylaws and the ILA Bylaws, nominees selected to appear on the slate “must be members of ILA at the time of nomination”; that is, by the time the slate is finalized.

The Nominating Committee is seeking candidates who have the strategic skill sets to govern a professional, nonprofit association. Duties and expectations of Executive Board members can be found in the IACRL Bylaws. For the 2022 election, skills especially needed include a big-picture focus and a global outlook; the ability to act as a change agent; a commitment to participate and serve actively for three years; and the ability to implement ILA’s Strategic Plan.

The submission deadline is now 5:00 PM on Friday, March 11. To submit a nomination, please complete the online nomination form. Please direct any questions to Sue Franzen, IACRL Past-President and Chair of the Nominating Committee, at srfranz@ilstu.edu.

The IACRL Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee wants to assist the IACRL (Illinois Association of College & Research Libraries) community in its endeavors to make academic libraries in Illinois diverse, equitable, and inclusive, but we can best do that when we fully understand the needs of the community.

To serve you better, the Task Force has developed an anonymous feedback form that will allow members to provide suggestions, make recommendations for resources and trainings, and offer a platform for sharing ideas and posing questions related to DEI. Please share your insights and concerns so we can support you in your efforts.

This is a reminder that the Illinois Association of College & Research Libraries (IACRL) Awards Committee is seeking submissions for the People’s Choice Award in Scholarly Publishing. This award will give academic and research librarians throughout Illinois the opportunity to read and evaluate scholarly works by their peers and then vote on a favorite. It will also present Illinois research and academic librarians with the opportunity to share their findings outside of a conference or other formal setting. IACRL welcomes submissions on all subjects relevant to Illinois academic and research libraries.

The criteria for submissions, along with the process for choosing winners, are available here. The deadline for submitting a scholarly work is now 5:00 PM Central Time on Monday, February 28. Please send your submission to Sue Franzen, IACRL Awards Committee Chair, at srfranz@ilstu.edu. If possible, send a link to the scholarly work; otherwise, submit it as an attachment, preferably as a PDF or in Word. If the work does not already contain an abstract or summary, please include one in the e-mail (a paragraph would suffice).

Once the Awards Committee has received the submissions and confirmed that they meet the criteria, voting will take place via electronic ballot in February or March. Voting will last for 30 days. The Awards Committee will then announce the winners, and those individuals will have the opportunity to present their work in a special webinar or at a future meeting of the IACRL Journal Club.

If you have any questions, please contact Sue Franzen at srfranz@ilstu.edu. Thank you very much.

The IACRL Conference & Continuing Education Committee and CARLI are pleased to partner for Spark: Open Pathways – Exploring the Intersections of Diversity Equity and Inclusion and Open Educational Resources. The event will take place via Zoom on Friday, April 1, starting at 10:00 AM CDT.

DEI and OER are important topics that we believe librarians want to engage with, and with that in mind we are again shifting the structure of Spark. The IACRL Conference and Continuing Education committee is partnering with CARLI to present the Open Illinois Hub, a new OER tool for Illinois higher education institutions. We are excited to highlight this tool that will help to bring OER to more institutions in Illinois.

After this presentation, we will have unconference-style breakout rooms for attendees to engage in conversations about DEI, OER, and where they intersect. We hope this offers attendees an opportunity to ask questions, make connections with other librarians, gain valuable insight, and discover where our barriers exist with these topics. With information from the report outs, we intend to create future programming to help fill any gaps identified.

The event will be held via Zoom. Library workers from all libraries in Illinois are welcome to attend!

To register, please go here. Contact IACRL President-Elect Dan Matthews, at matthewsd29@morainevalley.edu, with any questions.
