Interested in running for ALA President-elect or Councilor-at-Large but weren’t approached by the Nominating Committee? You can still get your name on the 2018 spring ballot by completing a petition form and obtaining the signatures of no fewer than 200 ALA current personal members for president-elect and 25 signatures for councilor-at-large. A petition form may be created by logging into the ALA website and following these instructions.
In addition to the petition itself, members must complete the Candidate Biographical Information Form as follows.
- If you wish to run for President-elect, please go here.
- If you wish to run for Councilor-at-Large, please go here.
You will be asked to create an account before you can access the form. Once the petition process is completed, petition candidates and nominated candidates are treated the same. They are not differentiated on the ballot because they are on equal footing and are all viable candidates for these positions.
The petition form for the 2018 election will become available on Wednesday, October 4, 2017. This form, along with the biographical information form, must be filed with the ALA Executive Director no later than 4:30 PM CST on Wednesday, December 6.
Ballot mailing for the 2018 ALA election will begin on March 12, 2018 and will run through April 4, 2018 with the results being announced on Wed., April 11, 2018. Individuals must be members in good standing as of Jan. 31, 2018 to be eligible to vote in the ALA election. Additional information about the ALA election process can be found here.
