Projects funded by the GMR for RAC member institutions
A panel made up of RAC members whose institution received funding during this program period were asked to explain about their project and reflect on the question:
* How did the funded projects change the perception of the library at your institution?
Each project was unique and the library was seen differently after project was implemented.
Barb Platts, Munson Healthcare, Traverse City, MI. Adding Value: The Health Information Professional as Part of the Hospital Clinical Rounding Team. Outreach Express award funded during Base Year (2011-12)
The project at Munson Healthcare was a multipronged approach with three components: Evidence-Based Literature Reviews, Information Literacy Training and Patient Education. An assessment was done of each component that showed success or value of the services. The patient education aspect was further developed and has impacted patient education and more specifically patient education documentation in the Electronic Health Record. An article published in the July 2015 Journal of Hospital Librarianship highlights the patient education program. It is entitled: Adding Value: The Health Information Professional as Part of the Hospital Clinical Rounding Team.
Scott Thomson, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science, Chicago. Mobile Information and Health Literacy Instruction Station. Technology Award funded during Option Year 2 (2013-14)
At Rosalind Franklin University, the library purchased a mobile computer station that was used primarily for information literacy instruction throughout the campus. The project increased the visibility of the library and the station was also used with community outreach.
Don Pearson, Mount Carmel Health System, Columbus OH. Education On-Demand; Using Technology to Extend Online Health Information Education Services Beyond the Library. Technology Award funded during Option Year 2 (2013-14)
At Mount Carmel Health System 10 ChromeBooks were used for outreach into the community. This is part of a strategy to provide consumer health outreach in the Columbus area. In addition to getting this funding, consumer health education provided by GMR staff enabled all our Consumer Health Library staff and many HSL librarians to get their Consumer Health Information Specializations so that they would have an understanding of consumer health information. Evidence of success for the mission of providing consumer health outreach is shown by new physical locations and the change in the number of staff committed to this endeavor. There was a student intern five years ago; now there are three staff (two FTEs).
Arlis Dittmer, Blessing Hospital, Quincy IL. Past, Present, & Future of Blessing Health System Visually Presented. Hospital Library Award funded during Option Year 3 (2014-15)
The Past, Present, & Future of Blessing Hospital Visually Presented project at Blessing Health System celebrates the community and the health system. GMR funding was used to begin to digitize photos for a new hospital lobby history wall. Subsequent non-GMR funding helped to finish the project which was larger than expected and encompassed over 14,000 photos. The library gained visibility through the project and was featured in a Springfield PBS station television program.
