The Medical Library Association’s Public Health/Health Administration Caucus and Asian Diaspora Coalition of Medical Librarians invite you to an upcoming webinar/workshop on microaggressions and the API (Asian/Pacific Islander) community, led by Alanna Aiko Moore. The event will take place on Wednesday, January 12, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM CDT. More information on the webinar’s content and the presenter is below.
What: Microaggressions are subtle, denigrating messages delivered to people from marginalized groups, oftentimes by well-meaning people who are unaware of the underlying messages they are sending. These everyday insults, slights, and indignities can result in negative emotional, psychological, and physical outcomes. This webinar will define microaggressions, and cover both racial microaggressions and microaggressions toward LGBTQ folks. Special attention will be paid to the everyday prejudice and discrimination faced by API folks in the current climate of “othering” immigrants, and strategies for interrupting microaggressions will be shared.
Who: Alanna Aiko Moore is the Librarian for Ethnic Studies, Critical Gender Studies, and Sociology at the University of California, San Diego. Alanna is the Past President of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and has served on the ALA Steering Committee for Organizational Effectiveness, the Task Force for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and has chaired the Committee on Diversity. She was also a member of the Steering Committee for the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color II. She has published and presented widely on microaggressions, intersectionality, LGBTQ identity, emotional and invisible labor, mentoring, self-care, and issues affecting women of color librarians. Prior to librarianship, she worked at social justice centered non-profits and community organizations.
