The Illinois Library Association (ILA) announces Emily Johnson, Regional Health Sciences Librarian & Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago Libraries as the 2018 Crosman Memorial Award winner. The Crosman Award is named in memory of Alex Crosman, director of the Peoria Public Library at the time of his death in 1986. The award recognizes the achievements of the library workers who are new or relatively new to the field and encourages continued involvement in the profession. Other awards honor those who have accomplished a great deal over a long period of time; this award is to honor someone who has accomplished a great deal in a short time.
Emily Johnson has been working at the UIC Libraries since 2013 and demonstrated her leadership skills when she served as Interim Head of the Library of Health Sciences in Peoria from May 2015 to January 2016. Both at the UIC Libraries of Health Science and in her previous position at the Virginia Commonwealth University, Ms. Johnson has taken the lead in building relationships with faculty in order to improve access to library resources while also developing innovative, curricular design programs, such as the NExT Target Outreach Project. Ms. Johnson has volunteered or been appointed to professional leadership positions at the state, regional, and national levels. Her enthusiasm and commitment to users, colleagues, and health sciences librarianship continues to be recognized by professional colleagues outside UIC, opening the door to increasing levels of engagement throughout the profession. Ms. Johnson has contributed to and furthered the knowledge base of the profession, publishing on topics of audience response systems, mobile point-of-care tools, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
The Crosman Award will be presented at the Awards Luncheon to be held on Tuesday, October 9, during the 2018 Illinois Library Association Annual Conference in Peoria. The luncheon starts at 12:00 PM.
