WebJunction will be hosting the free webinar “Public Health and Public Libraries: Librarians as Health Literacy First Responders”. It will take place on Wednesday, October 21, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM CST. Although the webinar is aimed at public libraries, much of the information covered will likely prove useful to librarians working in academic health and medical settings. The webinar will focus on the ways in which librarians can ensure that members of the general public have access to reliable health information. Embracing this role is especially crucial, as libraries are often one of the first places that people seek health and medical information, and these individuals may not initially possess the knowledge and background to distinguish between good and bad information online. Specific topics to be covered include the public-health profession, creative strategies that libraries have taken to raise awareness of public health, and the training and financial resources that libraries can use for outreach efforts.
