The American Library Association has released the results of the 2017 elections. A number of Illinois academic librarians ran for office.
Dr. Scott Walter, University Librarian at DePaul University, lost a very close race for ALA President-Elect. He came in second out of three candidates, with 35.2 percent of the votes; winner Loida Garcia-Febo received 35.9 percent. The difference was just 69 votes, out of 9,464 cast.
In the election for ALA Councilor-at-Large (the top 34 vote-receivers won), Steve Brantley (Eastern Illinois University) and Sarah McHone-Chase (Northern Illinois University) both ran. Neither received enough votes to finish among the top 34.
Kristin E. Martin, University of Chicago, has been chosen as Vice-President/President-Elect of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services. She ran against Lisa German and received 57.4 percent of the vote. Martin’s term as President will last from 2018 to 2019.
In the race for Secretary of the Association of College & Research Libraries Art Section, Mallory Sajewski (Western Illinois University) won. She ran unopposed.
Pamela M. Salela (University of Illinois Springfield) was chosen as Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect of the ACRL Women and Gender Studies Section. She, also, was unopposed.
In the election for Library and Information Technology Section Director-at-Large, Margaret Heller (Loyola University Chicago) received the most votes. (The top three candidates won seats.)
Karen Hogenboom (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) was chosen as Publications Committee Chair-Elect of the Government Documents Round Table. She was one of three write-in candidates for the position (there were no nominees on the ballot) and was selected by lot.
