We are seeking chapters for an upcoming ACRL publication, Navigating Disability in the Academic Library Workplace. The goal of this publication is to explore disability not from a patron or user point of view, but from the people who work in academic libraries. Recognizing that there are a large number of academic librarians working with disabilities, this volume will center chapters that invite readers to consider how to support and encourage the success of librarians in the workplace. For the purposes of this book, the editors define disability as a long-term, physical, mental, or neurological impairment that, “in interaction with various attitudinal and environmental barriers, hinders…full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others” (Adapted from United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Article I).
This book will not only provide a guide for librarians with disabilities to better understand themselves and how they can support themselves in the workplace but provide a resource for able-bodied managers and librarians to utilize as a resource. This publication will be divided into four sections: philosophy/theory, case studies of employees, case studies of library leadership, and best practices regarding our work in libraries. We will prioritize submissions from individuals with disabilities and encourage perspectives from individuals with disabilities and intersectional identities, including new or unpublished voices.
Individual chapters within this book will undergo an open non-anonymous peer review process with fellow book chapter authors and an editorial review process before being submitted to ACRL. All chapters will follow APA 7th style guidelines.
Interested authors, please submit this form with a potential title, author information, and a short 250 description of your proposed book chapter. Within the form, you will also find potential chapter ideas, a book timeline, and further information. Proposals are due by Friday, June 30.
