Call for Proposals for Library Instruction West 2020: Justice
University of Washington, Seattle on unceded Duwamish lands
July 22-24, 2020
https://libraryinstructionwest.wordpress.com/cfp/
Library Instruction West seeks proposals for its 14th conference to be held July 22-24, 2020 at the University of Washington in Seattle. Our conference is held on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People, who are still here. We are grateful for the land itself and for the many contributions of Duwamish Tribe, past, present, and future.
The conference theme is Justice.
The concept of justice raises more questions than answers: justice for whom, and when? What does justice look like when done well? Is justice something that can ever be achieved, or is it the goal toward which we continually work?
The conference organizing committee seeks creative, dynamic session proposals that engage with the conference theme. How can instruction in libraries yield more just outcomes for our learners and library workers? How does “justice” differ from neutrality, fairness, or open-mindedness? How do libraries perpetuate injustice, and what steps can we take to address oppression and inequality in our workplaces?

We welcome submissions from all educators in all types of libraries, including academic, public, and special libraries and archives. We also welcome submissions from LIS students.
A Different Approach: Open Review
In the past, Library Instruction West has used an anonymous review process to evaluate proposals. In an effort to be transparent and to live up to the conference theme, and in recognizing that “anonymous” review is rarely so, the organizing committee has decided to use an open review process where identifying information (including your name, institutional affiliation, and self-disclosed positionality) will be included with proposals when reviewed. Full details about the proposal review process, including how identifying information will be used and the evaluation rubric, can be found with the instructions for submitting proposals.
Proposal Deadline: Monday, September 23, 2019 by 11:59pm
Proposals are due by Monday, September 23, 2019. Presenters will be notified in January 2020. Registration for the conference will open after presenters have been notified.
How to Submit
The proposal submission form, along with full details about the proposal review process and evaluation rubric, can be found on the conference website.
