The Cataloging Maintenance Center (CMC) will offer the following cataloging courses online during FY2025. All courses are asynchronous.
“Cataloging Basics”–Monday, July 8 – Sunday, August 18, 2024
This six-week crash course in basic cataloging dives into cataloging using RDA, the Resource Description and Access standards, and MARC, the MAchine-Readable Cataloging standards. Eric McKinney will cover MARC fields 0XX-8XX and fixed-field elements, the most commonly used fields when cataloging library items.

“Cataloging 3D Objects, Kits, and Realia”–Monday, September 9 – Sunday, October 6, 2024
Dr. Pamela Thomas will spend four weeks providing hands-on cataloging of 3D Objects, Kits, and Realia. During the course, students will originally catalog 3D and 2D objects and kits, including games, flyers, a bingo set, a postcard, and other challenging items. Cataloging knowledge and experience is strongly recommended.

Do you have a stack of DVDs to catalog but don’t know where to start? Eric McKinney will help you learn how to catalog DVDs.

“Focus on Serials Cataloging”–Monday, November 4 – Sunday, November 17, 2024
Are you new to cataloging serials (continuing resources), or do you need a refresher? Then this is the class for you! Dr. Pamela Thomas will spend two weeks discussing how to fill in the fixed and variable fields of a serials bibliographic MARC record.

Have you found records in OCLC that are almost a match, but you need to create a new bibliographic record, or do you? If you find a close match, you can derive a new record. Mary Cornell will teach you how to do that.

“Cataloging CDs”–Monday, April 7 – Sunday, April 20, 2025
Cataloging CDs can be challenging–what MARC (MAchine-Readable Cataloging) fields are required, and which ones are optional? How do you fill out the fixed-field elements? Eric McKinney will guide you through the process of creating bibliographic records for CDs.
