Dr. Clara M. Chu, Director and Mortenson Distinguished Professor at the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs (on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus), has been chosen as the American Library Association’s representative to the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO. Dr. Chu’s term will last through June of 2018. The Commission includes representatives from 50 professional organizations; the American Library Association is one of only two that are library-related. The role of the Commission is to advise the U.S. government on programs and projects undertaken by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. The Commission works with UNESCO to help the organization accomplish its goals of eliminating poverty, promoting intercultural dialogue, and achieving sustainable development, through worldwide projects focusing on communication, education, and other challenges.
