Position Description
The UIC Library seeks an enterprising, forward-thinking, and service-oriented librarian to enrich the student experience and provide new opportunities for the Library to engage with the undergraduate community and to participate in the reference and instruction programs. This is a non?tenure track faculty position in the Research Services & Resources (RSR) Department in the Richard J. Daley Library.
Working collaboratively with library faculty and staff and other campus partners, the Undergraduate Experience Librarian will initiate, coordinate, and assess services focused on engaging and supporting undergraduates. This position provides opportunities for innovation, exploration, and professional growth in creating scalable information literacy programming, outreach activities, and assessment efforts for the improvement of the undergraduate experience.
The Department
Research Services & Resources (RSR) is responsible for providing excellent reference and instruction service and building distinguished collections in a user-centered environment. The Undergraduate Experience Librarian reports to the RSR Librarian. The department consists of 8.8 FTE faculty members, two Undergraduate Experience Librarians, two civil service staff, and a number of graduate student employees.
Duties
Lead library outreach efforts for a diverse and multicultural undergraduate community in collaboration with library staff and relevant campus partners invested in student success, with emphasis on key transitions from high school, community college, and university transfers to UIC.Participate in providing research assistance and information services in person, by appointment and virtually through e?mail and instant messaging.Train and supervise Graduate Hourly reference assistants.Design and present library instruction in the classroom as part of the course-integrated instruction program, with emphasis on first-year programs.Integrate elements focused on undergraduate student retention, progression, and graduation rates into other library services and develop methods to measure and assess Library impact in these areas.Contribute to and participate in the overall mission of the library.May serve as a liaison to an assigned disciplinary area with collection development responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school program. Degree must be completed before the start of the appointment. Evidence of strong interest in and understanding of emerging trends in library engagement with undergraduate student success. Outstanding customer service skills devoted to improving the user experience. Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and collaborate effectively with colleagues, staff, and users at all levels and from diverse backgrounds.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strongly Preferred Qualifications
Professional reference/instruction experience in an academic library serving diverse patrons. Student supervisory experience.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Understanding of information technology and the opportunities it presents to enhance user service. Ability to work a schedule including evening and weekend hours.
Salary
Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience. The minimum salary for a full-time twelve-month appointment is $51,333. Benefits for a twelve month appointment include 24 days of vacation, 12 annual sick leave with additional disability benefits, 11 paid holidays; paid medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary, coverage for dependents may be purchased); two dental plans available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of the State Universities Retirement System compulsory; no Social Security coverage but Medicare payment required. This appointment is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois and UIC United Faculty Local 6456, IFT-AFT, AAUP.
