Title: Taking on OER: Barriers and Limitations to OER Implementation in STEM
Description: Open Education Resources (OER) are frequently touted for their benefits, including decreased textbook and associated education material costs for students. However, traditional textbook costs continue to rise, and OER implementation is still limited in most institutions. In this program, we will explore some barriers to OER adoption, from integration into library discovery and access systems, to outreach and cultural perceptions of OER materials, to the limitations of OER materials to support the STEM classroom and lab experience. We will also explore a successful OER project implementation, in order to better understand how barriers to OER may be overcome.
Speakers: Andrea McGinley, Biological Sciences Professor, University of Illinois at Chicago; Chris Diaz, Digital Publishing Librarian, Northwestern University; and Arend Kuyper, the Stats faculty member, Northwestern University
