Panel Presentation 1:
Title: “Raising awareness: Creating a toolkit for open science advocacy”
Abstract:
This presentation will detail the collaborative efforts of a science librarian and scholarly communications librarian to promote open access practices at an R1 land and space grant university. In a time of skyrocketing article processing fees, how can we as librarians support science faculty who value open science? How can we ourselves help build a community of practice around open science?
Presented by:
Steph Crowell, Reference and Instruction Librarian, Utah State University
Panel Presentation 2:
Title: “Revisiting OER Beyond Textbooks: Meeting the Needs of STEM and Health Sciences Students”
Abstract:
We will revisit in this talk presentations that we gave in 2019 examining gaps in OER resources for students in STEM and the health sciences. Conversations about OER had largely overlooked the emergence of new subscription-based online study tools that students in STEM and the health sciences were heavily using and asking libraries to purchase. We asked: Why were STEM and health sciences students turning to these new resources instead of or in addition to library resources, textbooks, and traditional teaching methods like lectures? Should libraries try to purchase these resources typically sold to individual students? Are there OER initiatives beyond textbooks that might meet the specific learning needs of STEM and health sciences students? We will look at what has changed in the 4 years since these presentations. We will propose questions for further conversation about how libraries might respond to the uptake of new online study tools and address STEM and health sciences learning needs not met by OER textbooks.
