The GIS Librarians for Open Workflows (GLOW) project focuses on the workflows of librarians and library staff charged with supporting geographic information systems (GIS) and its use across diverse academic disciplines. Funded by the Institute of Library and Museum Services (IMLS) and under the direction of the University of Chicago library, GLOW facilitates exchanges with librarians around their existing consulting and instructional workflows and practices, their development and use of OERs, and other topics pertaining to these professional experiences in academic library settings. To provide meaningful relevance for the GIS librarian community as a whole, the GLOW forums ground these exchanges in concrete examples from social justice, health, and infrastructure application areas.
The next GLOW forum will be offered online Tuesday July 25, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM CDT. During the virtual session, modified for an online and condensed format, our discussions will cover workflows and activities undertaken within university library contexts, building on shared vocabularies and practices. A second focal area includes review of current and future digital platforms regularly used as portals for search and dissemination of OERs.
This opportunity is designed for GIS librarians and other academic staff who serve in a support role for the geospatial sciences in higher education. Examples and case studies are drawn from university library settings in the United States and Canada.

GLOW is led by Cecilia Smith, Director of Digital Scholarship at the UChicago Library and former GIS and Maps Librarian, in collaboration with Diana Sinton, Senior Research Fellow at the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS). The IMLS National Leadership Grant for Libraries “support projects of national impact that address significant challenges and opportunities facing the library and archives fields and have the potential to advance theory and practice”.
