Save the date! The Midwest Archives Conference (MAC) Speaker’s Bureau welcomes registrants for the workshop “Arrangement and Description 101”, to be held at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, on Friday, June 23, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM CDT. Pam Hackbart-Dean, Professor and Head of the University of Illinois Chicago’s Special Collections and University Archives, will lead the free workshop for participants.
Processing is the physical act of assessing, arranging, and describing archival collections. There are a number of steps conducted by the archivist to ensure collections are processed effectively and efficiently with the overarching goal of providing access for researchers. Arrangement and description of archival materials are the nuts and bolts of all archival work.
This workshop introduces participants to the methods and standards archivists use to arrange and describe collections of all shapes and sizes. Basic principles and best practices associated with archival processing will be discussed. Participants will also have the opportunity to develop the analytical and decision-making skills required to arrange and describe historical records and manage the process.
Though the workshop is free, registration is required. Space is limited to the first 35 registrants. The workshop will be held at the Gerber Center on Augustana College’s campus, located at 3435 9 1/2 Avenue, Rock Island, IL. Parking is available near the front entrance. Please see this map for directions and parking.
