The next free webinar hosted by the Special Libraries Association Education Division and ACRL’s EBSS (Education and Behavioral Sciences Section) Education Committee will occur at 11:30 AM CDT on Friday, October 11. The webinar features Rebecca Bott (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), who will talk about academic services for incarcerated persons.
Rebecca Bott is Archivist for the Education Justice Project, the University of Illinois’ college-in-prison program at Danville Correctional Center. She acquired her MLIS from Simmons in 2012 before working as a rare book cataloger and ultimately leaving libraries and joining the antiquarian book trade. She made her way back to librarianship when she joined EJP as the Community Librarian in 2017.
Higher education in prison programs are responsible for providing their incarcerated college students with the same timely and equitable access to library materials as their traditional students, but must do so while navigating the complex issues inherent in working in a carceral space. In this session, we will discuss how the Education Justice Project currently provides library services for our students and explore some of the unique challenges and rewards of working in a prison. We will then consider ways academic librarians can support this work, both inside the prison walls and at their institution.
