This webinar will examine the increasing impact of generative AI on academic research and citation practices. It highlights findings from a survey and course assignment given to students in Florida Tech’s COM 2012: Navigating the Information Landscape during the Fall 2024 semester. They were designed to assess students’ understanding of generative AI and its potential pitfalls. The presentation will address best practices for ensuring accuracy and integrity when using generative AI, explore ethical challenges, and share strategies for librarians to foster responsible AI use in academia.

Librarians from five campuses will discuss the creation of a cross-disciplinary collection of open educational resources (OER) in their shared institutional repository, including how they developed a permanent record of faculty-produced OER and made faculty-created educational materials more discoverable. Session participants will gain insight into the creation of collaborative collection policies, collection structure design, and shared workflows.

Robin Fowler and Kelly Handy, University of Florida will discuss the implementation of a rule-based chatbot to accompany the UF Libraries’ Ask A Librarian virtual reference service. The goal of the chatbot was to streamline the virtual chat experience while still encouraging librarian-patron interactions. It outlines the development of the chat workflows for the bot through survey and analysis, workflow creation using Springshare’s chatbot tool, and implementation. The presentation will also discuss the struggles experienced during implementation, usage data and preliminary outcomes of the new chatbot, and next steps for continued improvement.
