Approaches to Centering Equity in Health Communication Research and Practice
Class Details
Date(s): Wednesday, October 4, 2023
Time: 1:00-2:00 PM CDT
October is Health Literacy Month! In celebration of health literacy month, please join us in bringing awareness to health literacy.
The hard truths of the pandemic – along with years of injustice and inequity experienced by historically marginalized and underrepresented communities – has positioned health communication at a crossroads. We have relied on traditional communication and marketing “best practices” that do not offer much opportunity for advocacy and are insufficient to move the needle on health disparities. To make progress, we must view diversity, equity, and inclusion not just through the lens of people, but also through the lens of processes.
Please join our two guest presenters, Sandy Hilfiker, MA, CEO of CommunicateHealth and Jaime Dawson, MPH, NIH Portfolio Director, also from CommunicateHealth, who will provide an overview of an equity-centered health communication framework with a focus on research, design, and strategy. The speakers will share real-world case studies of incorporating the principles of the framework into the development of inclusive health materials, digital products, and campaigns, including case studies specific to the work and mission of NNLM. We’ll discuss practical strategies and tips for how webinar participants can apply an equity-centered health communication approach to their everyday work.
