We are excited to announce the preliminary program for the Chicago Research Summit’s virtual conference, to be held on Friday, October 20, 2023! Tickets are also available for the opening reception with author Rebecca Makkai, to be held on Thursday, October 5,, at Columbia College.
Chicago Research Summit Program:
This year’s program will start with looking at how to apply the solutions journalism frame to an undergraduate class on Chicago. Columbia College’s Sharon Bloyd Peshkin will discuss how
to center the people or organizations responding to the problems we encounter in our city in her City of Big Solvers presentation.
Concurrent with that session will be an opportunity to hear about black women involved in the temperance movement from Archivist Janet Olson at the Frances Willard House Museum.
Her session, titled Hidden Voices + Unexpected Sources will highlight ways we can engage students in archival research to shed light on the hidden stories of Chicago.
And that is just the first 30 minutes of a full day of content on how to improve the undergraduate research experience by connecting it to local communities and sources. We will hear about researching true crime at the Chicago Historical Museum, studying animal behaviors at the zoo, Google maps as a research tool, how to promote civic engagement and much more.
