This is a reminder about next week’s ACRL webinar viewing at UIC’s Daley Library. In addition to refreshments, there will be some freebies from ACRL. If you are not familiar with Daley Library and the UIC campus, go here for general directions. The interactive map will direct you to the library’s location. Parking nearby is available in the Halsted Street parking structure or the one on Harrison Street. The cost should not exceed $13.00, depending on how long one is parked there. If you are taking public transportation to campus, the Blue Line (UIC Halsted stop) or the CTA bus lines (please see the CTA Trip Planner), will bring you closest to the library. (Thank you to Gwen Gregory for providing this information.)

The Illinois Association of College and Research Libraries (IACRL) and the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Richard J. Daley Library are pleased to host a viewing of the Association of College and Research Libraries webinar “Essentials of Usability Design for Library Research Guides”, presented by Jason Puckett. This recorded webinar, lasting approximately one hour, will cover the latest tools and strategies for making library research guides as “user-friendly” as possible for students and others. A full description of the webinar and the associated learning outcomes is below.
Essentials of Usability Design for Library Research Guides (Jason Puckett)
Web design, in the form of creating online research guides, has become a big part of many librarians’ jobs, but we’re rarely taught how to do it well. Most of us learn the nuts and bolts of how to make guides, without learning the principles of how to make them usable — the simple techniques of visual and textual design that can help us create guides that users will understand more easily, and stick around to use.
Learning outcomes:
- How usability design affects library users’ experience
- What librarians don’t know — but need to — about web usability
- Easy to use principles of usability that can immediately improve your research guides
- Free resources to share with your librarians and guide authors to better inform your institutional style plans
The viewing will take place on Thursday, June 7, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, in Room 1-470 of the Daley Library. Mary Case, University Librarian and Dean of Libraries for the University of Illinois at Chicago, will give a brief welcome. Also, following the event, please stay for refreshments and an opportunity to converse with colleagues. There is no charge to attend this event, and registration is not required. If you could RSVP to Eric Edwards (see below for e-mail address), to ensure there are enough refreshments, however, that would be greatly appreciated.
More information, including directions to campus, is forthcoming. If you have any questions, please contact Gwen Gregory (site coordinator), at ggregory@uic.edu, or Eric Edwards (IACRL Vice-President/President-Elect), at eedwards@ilsos.net.
