Several studies have been published in the library literature on how university and college libraries can adapt their environments to make them more accommodating to autistic students, but what about autistic library employees? Do libraries consider the needs of autistic faculty and staff, particularly as it pertains to hiring them? How difficult is it for autistic individuals to obtain employment in an academic library? What barriers exist for them when navigating the hiring process?
This research study aims to fill a gap in the literature by exploring the experience of autistic library employees navigating the hiring process for college and university libraries. We’re seeking responses from any library employee who (1) is formally diagnosed as autistic or self identifies as autistic (2) was previously employed or is currently employed in a library based at an institution of higher education. Participants must be age 18 or older.
