Does your library offer programs and services to assist patrons who have dementia? Are you considering adding such services, or are you just curious about what other libraries have done to address the issue? Be sure to attend the “Serving Patrons with Dementia” workshop on Tuesday, January 26. The event, which is in-person only, will last from 10:00 to 11:30 AM and will take place at the Romeoville Branch of the White Oak Public Library District.
While the main focus will be on dementia in general, participants will also discuss strategies for helping specifically those patrons who have Alzheimer’s. Mary Beth Reidner, a retired Illinois librarian who founded the Alzheimer’s & Related Dementias Interest Group for ALA, will share her background creating guidelines for serving library patrons with the conditions. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to discuss their own experiences serving members of these populations and exchange ideas on what the most effective approaches might be.
